Adults

The Sacrament of Reconciliation celebrates God’s mercy and our need to be forgiven of our sins so that we may experience a restored relationship with God and our neighbor. One of the two sacraments of healing in the Catholic Church, "Christ instituted the sacrament of Penance for all sinful members of his Church: above all for those who, since Baptism, have fallen into grave sin, and have thus lost their baptismal grace and wounded ecclesial communion." (CCC 1446) Furthermore, the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) states in paragraph 1455 that "the confession (or disclosure) of sins, even from a simply human point of view, frees us and facilitates our reconciliation with others. Through such an admission man looks squarely at the sins he is guilty of, takes responsibility for them, and thereby opens himself again to God and to the communion of the Church in order to make a new future possible."

Non-Catholic adults seeking to receive this Sacrament for the first time are invited to join our OCIA program. Learn more about OCIA here.

Children

Parents teach their kids right and wrong, and as they approach the age of reason, children learn how to thoughtfully examine their conscience and prepare to confess their sins.

St. Francis de Sales' parish formation program prepares children in the second grade during the fall semester to celebrate their First Reconciliation. At the time of Baptism, parents vow to raise their children in the faith. To assist parents in living out these promises, two parent sessions are provided prior to their child's reception of the sacrament. Sessions for the 2025-26 school year will take place on Sundays, September 28th and November 16th, 2025, from 9:00-10:00 AM in the Parish Hall.

Our First Reconciliation Retreat for parish and Xavier Catholic School students will take place on Saturday, December 13th, 2025, from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM in the Parish Hall. At least one parent per family is expected to attend with their student. The Sacrament of Reconciliation for all second-graders and other students preparing to receive the Sacrament will be held on Sunday, December 14th, 2025, at 1:00 PM in the Church. Parents, siblings, and other family members who have already made their First Reconciliation are also invited to receive the sacrament at this time. Please click here if you need childcare for the First Reconciliation Retreat.

Although children rarely commit serious sin, it is important to help them distinguish between sin and accident, and how to judge their actions through a child-friendly examination of conscience. This examination and other resources are provided below.

Note: Children must have received the Sacrament of Reconciliation before they receive their First Holy Communion.

From the Archdiocese of KCK Office of Deaf Ministry:

"If you have a deaf child or know a parishioner who has a deaf child who needs to go through Sacramental preparation, please contact Katie Locus in the Office of Deaf Ministry at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call us at 913-324-5378. Each deaf child has a different way of learning, and it is not always easy to figure out how to optimize his or her learning when it comes to our faith. We would be more than happy to work with you and your home parish to ensure each deaf child is able to both learn about our beautiful Catholic faith and stay on track and ready to receive Sacraments."
